People search for “gta vcs recomp android” and “gta vcs recomp steam deck” a lot. Here is the honest state on November 8, 2026, from the three projects’ releases and issue trackers.

Android

There is no Android build of GTA VCS Recomp, VCSNative or PSPRecomp, and none is announced. gta-vcs-recomp compiles x86-64 code for Windows and Linux on your own machine; a phone would need an ARM build and its own renderer, input and packaging.

  • Windows containers on Android: one attempt stalled at the CMake step for 7 hours (#84). Not supported.
  • An APK called “GTA VCS Recomp”: not from these projects. Do not install it.
  • Want to play on a phone today? Vice City Stories was a PSP game, and the PSP version runs in the PPSSPP emulator on Android with your own copy. A PSPRecomp issue asks whether a mobile port of the game would be the better target (#15); there is no answer yet.

Steam Deck

The Deck runs SteamOS, an Arch-based Linux with Vulkan 1.3 (Mesa RADV), so on paper it fits the AppImage. In practice:

  1. Not on the supported list. The README names Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Linux Mint 21, Fedora and Arch.
  2. The build installs packages. The launcher’s Build tools step installs clang 19+ and development libraries through the distribution’s package manager (apt, dnf or pacman). SteamOS keeps its system read-only and resets it on updates, so this step is the obstacle.
  3. No test report. The project’s issue tracker has no Steam Deck report as of November 8, 2026.

If you try anyway: do it in Desktop Mode, keep the build folder on the internal drive or a fast SD card, and use the launcher’s Install in a terminal option to see exactly which packages it wants before changing anything. Once built, vcs itself is an ordinary Vulkan program; add it to Steam as a non-Steam game to use the Deck’s controls.

Performance should not be the problem: the README reports a locked 60 fps on a 2015 Intel HD 520 laptop under Linux, a much weaker GPU than the Deck’s.

Linux desktops

Linux is fully supported by gta-vcs-recomp: VCS-Recomp-0.2.3-x86_64.AppImage (38.1 MB) on glibc 2.35+, X11 or Wayland, Vulkan 1.3 via Mesa or NVIDIA. v0.2.1 fixed a package conflict on Fedora with RPMFusion’s FFmpeg (#63). Follow the Linux install steps.

macOS

gta-vcs-recomp has no macOS build. VCSNative ships VCSNative-macOS.zip (20.5 MB) for Apple Silicon on macOS 13 or later, with MoltenVK inside. It needs PSP game files, not the PS2 disc.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a GTA VCS Recomp Android version?

No. gta-vcs-recomp builds for Windows and Linux on x86-64 only, VCSNative for Windows and Apple Silicon Macs, and PSPRecomp has no releases at all. An APK named “GTA VCS Recomp” or “Vice City Stories PC port” did not come from these projects.

Can I run it in Winlator or another Windows container on Android?

One user tried in an Android Windows-container app and the build stayed at “Configuring the build (CMake)” for 7 hours (#84). The project does not support it. Building is a full clang compile of about 200 MB of C++, which is the wrong job for a phone.

How do people play Vice City Stories on Android then?

The game was originally a PSP title, so on Android it is normally played with the PPSSPP emulator and your own copy of the PSP game. That is emulation, not a recompilation, and nothing on this site helps you obtain the game.

Does GTA VCS Recomp work on Steam Deck?

Not documented. The Linux AppImage needs glibc 2.35+, Vulkan 1.3 and python3, which SteamOS has, but the build also installs clang 19+ and development packages through the package manager, and SteamOS’s system is read-only. No Steam Deck report exists in the project’s tracker yet.

Would the Steam Deck be fast enough?

Speed is unlikely to be the problem. The README’s slowest tested machine is a 2015 laptop with Intel HD 520 graphics, which holds a locked 60 fps on Linux. The hard part on the Deck is the build environment, not the game.

What about VCSNative on Steam Deck?

VCSNative has no Linux build. A PSPRecomp pull request to build on Linux and run through Proton (#10) is open but not merged, and a Linux build of PSPRecomp has no rendering backend (#3).
